EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
