Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
